PANAJI: On Saturday, Roman Catholics celebrated All Souls’ Day. They offer prayers on this day for all the faithful who have passed away and are thought to be in purgatory because their souls were burdened with the guilt of smaller sins when they passed away.
According to Roman Catholic belief, the prayers of the faithful on earth will help purify their souls so they might enter Heaven and experience God’s presence. People offer masses for the deceased’s souls’ rest and adorn their graves.
Since ancient times, specific days have been set aside for the intercession of specific deceased groups. Odilo, the abbot of Cluny who passed away in 1048, is credited with establishing a day for a general intercession on November 2.
The day was chosen to be honored as All Souls Day, and it became almost ubiquitous before the end of the 13th century.
next the celebration of those Saints Day, November 1, which honors those church members thought to be in heaven, the earthly church turns to prayer for those souls said to be suffering in purgatory the next day.
