VASCO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar has extended his support to Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on the Maimolem Wetland issue, asserting that the project will significantly benefit local farmers by boosting agriculture and preserving the water body for future environmental needs. Speaking after felicitating Vasco-based athlete Swapnil Dawre, who recently secured the first place in the ICN trophy at Telangana, Amonkar emphasized the importance of the wetland in enhancing agricultural productivity and protecting the ecosystem.
Amonkar, however, criticized Congress leaders, including South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes, accusing them of politicizing the issue to serve the interests of a particular lobby. “This wetland initiative, led by Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, is essential for the community and will benefit the entire Taluka. Unfortunately, certain Congress leaders are trying to incite farmers and politicize the issue without realizing its benefits. These leaders are misleading people, although the Maimolem Wetland draft notification was initiated during their time in power,” Amonkar remarked.
He further alleged that Congress leaders were acting in the interests of a specific group aiming to undertake a large-scale construction project in the area. “Some individuals, including former chairperson Leo Rodrigues, appear to shift their positions frequently, aligning themselves with political figures who have significant property interests in the region. This wetland declaration has disrupted their plans, leading to their opposition,” Amonkar stated.
Amonkar reiterated his support for the wetland initiative and encouraged those within the BJP who are secretly aligned with Congress to make their allegiances clear. “This conspiracy by Congress leaders to oppose the project for the benefit of a builder lobby must be exposed. I stand firmly with Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar in supporting the wetland, which will benefit the entire community,” Amonkar concluded.
The wetland issue continues to be a contentious topic in the region, with political and environmental implications at the forefront of local discussions.
