New Delhi: Indian squash sensation Anahat Singh produced a stunning performance at the PSA Gold level Chicago Open on Thursday, defeating top seed and eight time world champion Nour El Sherbini in straight games to reach the quarter finals.
The 18 year old, ranked World No. 15, overcame the World No. 3 Egyptian 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 in a remarkable victory that marked the biggest achievement of her career so far. The result was particularly special for Anahat, who has grown up admiring El Sherbini and studying her performances.
Despite facing one of the most accomplished players in squash history, Anahat displayed remarkable composure and tactical discipline. She controlled the pace of the contest, limited unforced errors and prevented her opponent from settling into her usual rhythm.
Anahat had received encouragement from India’s national coach before the match, reinforcing her belief that she could challenge the tournament favourite with a strong performance. The young Indian subsequently executed her game plan effectively to secure a memorable victory.
Reflecting on the result, Anahat expressed disbelief at defeating a player she had admired throughout her development. She described El Sherbini as an inspiration to squash players and admitted that she had expected to need time to adjust to playing against her idol.
The victory further strengthens Anahat’s growing reputation as one of India’s brightest sporting prospects. Coached by former world No. 1 Gregory Gaultier, alongside Saurav Ghosal and Stephane Galifi, she has continued to make significant progress since turning professional in 2023.
Anahat also won the World Junior Championship title earlier this year and has collected multiple Professional Squash Association titles. She has emerged as the youngest Asian player to break into the world top 20.
El Sherbini, meanwhile, boasts an extraordinary record, having spent 265 weeks at the top of the world rankings and won eight world championship titles along with four British Open crowns.
With this emphatic victory, Anahat advances to the Chicago Open quarter finals, delivering a major statement about her growing ambitions on the international squash circuit.
