PANAJI: Important archaeological discoveries have emerged during restoration work at the historic Shree Saptakoteshwar Temple at Diwar, with relics and remains dating between the 14th and 16th centuries unearthed along the old pathway between Koti Tirth and Madhavachi Talli.
According to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the discoveries indicate the possible existence of an ancient temple complex and a sacred corridor at the site.
Among the significant finds are a Kirtimukh motif, traditionally carved above temple doorways, a carved capital of a temple pillar and portions of Dev Khostam, used for placing idols.
The variety of stone typologies and temple motifs suggests successive reconstruction of the temple during the Vijayanagar period, following the destruction of an earlier temple dating to the Kadamba period.
Sawant said the discovery of relics belonging to successive eras is significant in strengthening the historical chronology and sacred legacy of the ancient site.
“Our Government remains committed to preserving, restoring and bringing Goa’s rich civilisational heritage to light,” the Chief Minister said.
