Guwahati: Assam’s flood death toll has climbed to 103 after two more people drowned in Sivasagar and Karbi Anglong districts, even as the overall flood situation showed signs of gradual improvement.
The number of people affected by the floods fell to more than 86,800 across four districts on Wednesday, down from nearly 1.13 lakh a day earlier. Golaghat remained the worst affected, with over 42,000 people impacted, followed by Nagaon with around 20,000 and Sivasagar with nearly 15,000.
Authorities are currently operating 79 relief camps and distribution centres across five districts, providing assistance to more than 13,000 people. Relief supplies distributed during the past 24 hours included rice, dal, salt and mustard oil.
Despite the decline in the affected population, floodwaters continue to cover 433 villages. Around 10,884 hectares of crop area have been damaged, while roads, embankments, bridges and other infrastructure have also suffered losses. The Dhansiri River remains above the danger level at Numaligarh. Flooding has additionally affected more than 32,900 domestic animals and poultry.
Amid the continuing crisis, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to classify Assam’s recurring floods and river erosion as a “national problem”.
A Congress delegation submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, highlighting the scale of the state’s vulnerability. The party said nearly 40% of Assam’s geographical area, covering about 31.05 lakh hectares, is flood-prone, compared with a national average of 10.2%.
The party also highlighted the repeated impact of floods and river erosion on farmers, daily wage earners, tea garden workers and displaced families, renewing the demand for stronger national intervention to address Assam’s long-running flood crisis.
