New Delhi: Retail inflation in India eased to a more than six-year low of 2.1% in June 2025, primarily due to a significant drop in food prices, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO). The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation stood at 2.82% in May 2025 and 5.08% in June 2024. This marks the lowest year-on-year inflation rate since January 2019, when it was recorded at 1.97%. The NSO attributed the sharp decline to both a favourable base effect and falling prices across key food categories, including vegetables, pulses, cereals, milk, meat, fish, sugar, and spices. The statement noted a…
NEW DELHI: With Elon Musk’s Tesla officially entering the Indian market, attention has quickly shifted to a crucial question: who will provide insurance for the EV giant’s vehicles? According to industry sources, digital-first insurer Acko has emerged as Tesla’s preferred partner for insurance in India. However, heavyweight insurers Bajaj Allianz and ICICI Lombard are also actively pursuing tie-ups with the American automaker, eager to capture a slice of the fast-growing EV insurance market. The discussions are still at an early stage, with no final agreements in place. Sources familiar with the matter said that insurers are exploring non-exclusive partnerships, allowing…
BENGALURU: The BJP has strongly criticized the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government for allegedly shifting blame onto Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and cricketer Virat Kohli over the June 4 stampede that occurred during the IPL victory parade. The tragic incident left 11 people dead and nearly 50 injured outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium. Responding to the government’s report—made public following a High Court directive—senior BJP leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Aravind Bellad said the state administration was attempting to deflect accountability after initially basking in the glory of RCB’s long-awaited IPL victory. “After 18 years, RCB won and the Congress government…
NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has raised alarm over the growing threat of glacial lake expansion in the fragile Himalayan region, a consequence of accelerated glacier melt caused by climate change. The tribunal has directed the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) to submit a comprehensive report within four weeks assessing the risks posed by these glacial lakes and suggesting mitigation strategies. Glacial lakes form when retreating glaciers melt and their water accumulates in natural basins. While these lakes are a visible sign of a warming planet, their instability poses a deadly threat. If the natural dams containing these…

He can now finish no higher than third. The first day featured two round-robin groups — the White Group and the Black Group — each consisting of…
TOKYO: Indian shuttlers had a disappointing outing on Thursday at the Japan Open Super 750 badminton tournament, with star performers Lakshya Sen and the top-ranked men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty crashing out in the second round. In men’s singles, World No. 18 Lakshya Sen fell to Japan’s Kodai Naraoka 19-21, 11-21 in a match that lasted nearly an hour. Sen, who had shown early promise with a convincing first-round win over China’s Wang Zheng Xing (21-11, 21-18), struggled to find rhythm against the in-form Japanese player and failed to convert key moments in both games. Meanwhile,…
