Mumbai: High-value ₹2,000 banknotes worth ₹5,884 crore remain in circulation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Wednesday, nearly two years after announcing their withdrawal. The RBI had declared on May 19, 2023, that ₹2,000 notes would be withdrawn from circulation, though they continue to be legal tender. At the time, the total value of these notes in circulation stood at ₹3.56 lakh crore. As of September 30, 2025, approximately 98.35% of the notes have been returned.
