New Delhi: Lionel Messi has expressed confidence ahead of Argentina’s FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Spain, saying his deep understanding of the Spanish side and its players could prove valuable as the reigning champions chase a second consecutive world title.
Fresh from Argentina’s dramatic semifinal comeback victory over England, Messi described Spain as one of the strongest and most complete teams in international football. Having spent the majority of his legendary career at Barcelona, the Argentine captain said he is very familiar with Spain’s football philosophy and many of the players who now form the backbone of the national team.
Messi revealed that he continues to follow Barcelona closely and still has a strong emotional connection with the club. He noted that several Spanish internationals currently represent Barcelona, making them players he knows well from both past encounters and regular observation.
Argentina booked their place in the final after producing a remarkable turnaround against England. After falling behind to Anthony Gordon’s second half strike, the defending champions responded with late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, both created by brilliant assists from Messi.
The victory, however, came amid renewed criticism from some quarters over controversial refereeing decisions that have followed Argentina throughout the tournament. Messi firmly rejected suggestions that his team had received favourable treatment, insisting their consistent success over the past four years is the result of quality rather than luck.
He said reaching consecutive World Cup finals is an achievement earned through hard work and performance, adding that Argentina have repeatedly proved they belong among the world’s best teams. Messi also remarked that critics would have questioned the team’s quality had they lost to England, but Argentina answered those doubts with their display on the pitch.
The Argentine icon also dedicated the memorable semifinal victory to the late Diego Maradona, saying the legendary captain would have taken immense joy from Argentina’s triumph over England on such a significant occasion.
