VASCO: Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Friday said the State government’s AI-enabled traffic camera system has been introduced to improve road discipline and enhance public safety, and not merely to issue traffic challans.
Speaking to reporters after attending a Mhaje Ghar awareness camp organised by the Chicalim Panchayat, Godinho said the government was concerned over the large number of motorists driving without valid vehicle insurance.
The programme was attended by Chicalim Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav, Deputy Collector Prataprao Gaonkar, representatives of the Communidade and other government officials.
Godinho said driving without valid insurance could have serious consequences, particularly in the event of a road accident, as victims may be left without adequate financial protection.
“We have rolled out AI cameras not to fine people but to bring discipline on our roads. It is shocking that many people are driving vehicles without valid insurance. This can become a major disaster in the event of an accident,” he said.
To encourage compliance, the Minister announced a one-month grace period during which motorists can renew or obtain valid vehicle insurance without being penalised for insurance-related violations.
He clarified, however, that AI cameras will continue to detect and enforce penalties for other traffic violations, including overspeeding, jumping traffic signals, riding without helmets and other offences under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Appealing to vehicle owners to make use of the grace period, Godinho urged motorists to ensure that all vehicle documents are updated, stressing that road safety is a collective responsibility shared by both the government and the public.
