CANACONA : A team of 5 members of Balram Charitable Trust will reach Wayanad in preparation for the construction of two houses under the ambitious ‘Shram-Dham’ initiative of Goa’s Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar to the two affected families of the Wayanad landslide disaster.
The team in coordination with the volunteers of Seva Bharati and RSS will carry out the identification of two houses to be built and carry out line-measurements to ready the same for foundation laying ceremony
By second week or mid-April Tawadkar alongwith 50 of his dedicated Shram-Dham warriors will join the local outfits Seva Bharati and RSS volunteers, and commence the construction works after holding a foundation stone laying ceremony.
Tawadkar in an informal chat with a few visiting scribes in his Canacona office, informed initially only two houses will be taken up for construction with the Shram-Dham concept of Balram Charitable Trust going national in Kerala State. ‘There is a need to construct more than 250 houses which are destroyed in the outrageous Wayanad landslide disaster, which was witnessed haplessly in the country. Presently, we are taking to build only two houses for the two affected families in Wayanad, Kerala Seva Bharati and RSS volunteers are helping us locally to complete these two houses, where our dedicated Shram-Dham warriors will take up the works on war-footing after a brief foundation stone laying ceremony is held in the second week of April.’
Tawadkar during his first-time visit to Wayanad, alongwith Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar visited and interacted with the local tribals of Chunda village in Vythiri of Wayanad.
It may be recalled that Tawadkar during the then assembly session in the first week of last August said his Balaram Charitable Trust will work along with 200 volunteers to construct 10 houses in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad.
Presently, Tawadkar is emphasizing to build only two houses in Wayanad under his ambitious Shram-Dham concept which according to him had already built more than 50 houses in the State of Goa.

The landslides were caused by heavy rains that caused hillsides to collapse, destroying the areas below. The disaster was one of the deadliest in Kerala’s history, with reports of 254 fatalities, 397 injuries and 118 people missing. Deforestation, seismic sensitivity, poor building construction, and global warming have been identified as possible causes for the landslides and fatalities.
More than 1,555 houses and other buildings including schools, a dispensary, the panchayat Bhawan, the electricity board office, and 136 community buildings were destroyed or damaged.
