PANAJI: The ongoing agitation over the demand for greater recognition of Marathi in Goa has triggered varied reactions from political leaders, with the issue being discussed against the backdrop of the ongoing Assembly session.
Minister Ramesh Tawadkar stressed the importance of Marathi-medium primary schools and said issues concerning education and the mother tongue should be discussed and addressed appropriately. He also spoke about the law and order situation, saying the government has a responsibility to take strict action against violations and ensure that necessary directions are implemented effectively.
Goa Assembly Speaker Ganesh Goankar, when questioned by the media about the ongoing Marathi language agitation, did not respond to questions and remained silent.
Cortalim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco said there was no need to change the existing decision on the official language issue. He questioned the timing of the renewed demand and alleged that the issue was being raised with the upcoming elections in mind.
Minister Sudin Dhavalikar recalled that the MGP had earlier supported the demand for Marathi as an official language and had participated in the movement. He said that after Konkani was declared the state language, the party accepted both Konkani and Marathi and maintained that Marathi should receive its rightful place.
Vasco MLA Krishna Daji Salkar said the Marathi language issue should be addressed based on the collective view and consent of the people. He maintained that his stand was not personal and that the party’s position should reflect the common view.
MLA Govind Gaude, meanwhile, said citizens have the constitutional right to express their views in a democracy. Reacting to the protest, he said those participating in marches and raising their demands were exercising their democratic rights.
The differing reactions highlight the political debate surrounding the Marathi language demand in Goa, with leaders taking varied positions on the issue as the agitation continues.
