PANAJI: The Goa Transport Department has revoked the driving licence of Meghana Sawardekar whose SUV killed three persons at Banastari.
“We’ve given her license revocation orders. Meghana had received show-cause notices to appear at the hearing. She has since told us that she is unable to drive due to her health. We have suspended her license as a result of this,” a transport official stated.
Her husband Paresh has also received a show-cause notice from the Panaji RTO. Paresh was detained by police after three people were killed while he was driving under the influence of alcohol and other substances, among other crimes.
High Court had granted bail to Paresh Sawardekar, accused in the Banastari accident case , after Crime Branch declared there was no need for custody. Paresh will be required to surrender his passport, stay within the state’s limits and cooperate with police when needed.
The High Court had issued a ruling requiring Meghana Sawardekar to deposit a sum of ₹2 crore with the court. This ruling comes as a response to Sawardekar’s plea challenging the summons issued by the Mardol police.
It may be noted that a couple residing in Divar – Suresh Fadte and Bhavana Fadte – died in the Banastarim accident along with Arup Karmakar after a high-end car crashed into their two-wheelers near the Banastarim bridge on August 6, late evening.
Police had arrested car driver Shripad alias Paresh Sawardekar in connection with the case. Sawardekar was later released on conditional bail by a court, while his wife Meghana was granted conditional anticipatory bail by court.
