New Delhi: BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has been appointed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council’s newly formed Governance Review Committee, marking a significant role for the Indian cricket administrator within the sport’s global governing body.
The committee has been created to review and strengthen governance practices across the ICC. Alongside Saikia, the panel includes Dr Mohammed Moosajee from Cricket South Africa and Dr Ros Rivaz, the ICC’s newly appointed Independent Director.
Saikia has also been named a member of the newly constituted Franchise Leagues Committee, which will be chaired by former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal. The committee also includes representatives from Cricket Namibia, the England and Wales Cricket Board, and Cricket Australia, reflecting the ICC’s focus on the growing influence of franchise based cricket around the world.
During its annual meetings, the ICC also approved a loan of USD 12.82 million for Cricket West Indies to support the board’s financial requirements and improve cash flow as it continues to address operational challenges.
The governing body reviewed the progress made by Sri Lanka Cricket in implementing a revised constitution and reiterated the need for elections to be held at the earliest. Until the process is completed, Sri Lanka Cricket will continue to remain unrepresented at ICC Board meetings.
The ICC also ratified the appointment of Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal as a Full Member Director, strengthening the board’s representation within the organisation.
In another key decision, Mauritius was officially admitted as the ICC’s 111th member, expanding the global reach of the sport. Meanwhile, Cricket Canada will remain suspended until it fulfils the conditions laid down by the ICC.
The council also placed France Cricket on notice over breaches of its membership criteria, signalling continued scrutiny of governance standards among member boards.
The decisions taken during the ICC Annual Meetings underline the governing body’s emphasis on strengthening administration, improving financial stability among member boards and supporting the continued global growth of cricket.
