New Delhi: Axar Patel revealed that patience, self belief and adapting to the conditions were the key reasons behind his match winning all round performance as India defeated England by six wickets in the opening ODI at Edgbaston to take a 1-0 lead in the three match series.
The left arm all rounder first claimed impressive figures of 4 for 62 to help restrict England to 258 before producing an unbeaten 57 during a crucial 102 run fifth wicket partnership with Washington Sundar that guided India comfortably to victory.
Axar described the innings as particularly satisfying after enduring a difficult T20I phase, where he felt he had been trying too hard to clear the boundary. This time, he focused on building a partnership, trusting the bounce of the pitch and relying on timing rather than power. He said giving himself time at the crease allowed him to settle before playing attacking shots.
India’s chase suffered early setbacks with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli falling cheaply, while Shubman Gill retired hurt after scoring 80. However, Axar and Sundar remained composed, stitching together an unbeaten stand that completely shifted the momentum in India’s favour.
The all rounder also explained that batting became much easier once players adjusted to the conditions. According to him, the new batter faced the toughest challenge because the pitch offered bounce, swing and seam movement. Spending time in the middle before attacking proved to be the most effective approach.
England experienced similar difficulties after choosing to bat first. The hosts slumped from 61 without loss to 80 for five before Joe Root and Liam Dawson rebuilt the innings with a 121 run partnership. Axar later returned to remove the lower order and finish as India’s standout bowler.
Looking ahead, Axar praised the strong understanding within the Indian squad, saying years of playing together have created confidence, unity and clearly defined roles. He believes the positive atmosphere inside the dressing room has strengthened the team’s performances as India now heads into the second ODI with a valuable 1-0 series advantage.
