New York: The FIFA World Cup 2026 final will create a historic first as reigning UEFA Euro champions Spain take on defending Copa America champions Argentina in a clash that has never before taken place on football’s biggest stage.
Spain secured their place in the final with a 2-0 victory over France in the first semifinal, while Argentina followed with a dramatic 2-1 win against England to book their spot in Sunday’s title decider at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
For the first time in World Cup history, the current champions of Europe and South America will face each other in the tournament final, adding another landmark chapter to football’s rich history.
Spain have enjoyed an outstanding campaign, remaining unbeaten with six wins and one draw in seven matches. The European champions have also built the tournament’s strongest defensive record, conceding just one goal while overcoming Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France on their route to the final.
Argentina, meanwhile, have been equally impressive, winning all seven of their matches to maintain a perfect record as they chase back to back World Cup titles. The defending champions defeated Algeria, Austria, Jordan, Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England to reach the final.
Lionel Messi has once again been the driving force behind Argentina’s success. The captain has scored eight goals and provided four assists during the tournament, including two assists in the semifinal victory over England. Argentina also lead the competition in goals scored with 19, highlighting their attacking dominance throughout the campaign.
The final promises to be a battle between two teams that have excelled in contrasting ways. Spain have relied on defensive solidity, conceding only once in seven matches, while Argentina have dazzled with their attacking firepower and unbeaten run.
With history on the line, Sunday’s final will determine whether Spain can add a first World Cup title since 2010 or Argentina can successfully defend the crown and further cement their place among football’s greatest international teams.
