New Delhi: Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated ahead of a planned second round of peace talks, with sharp warnings from both sides raising doubts over the future of negotiations.
US President Donald Trump cautioned that failure to reach an agreement could lead to renewed conflict, stating that if the current ceasefire collapses without progress, “bombs will start going off.” His remarks come as a fragile two week truce between the two nations is set to expire, with little indication it will be extended.
On the other side, Iran has pushed back strongly against what it described as pressure tactics. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Tehran would not engage in negotiations under threats and indicated that the country is prepared with “new options” if hostilities resume. Iranian officials have also accused Washington of undermining the ceasefire through actions such as the seizure of an Iranian flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz.
The developments have cast uncertainty over the next round of talks, which are expected to take place in Pakistan. While the US has indicated that its delegation will attend, Iran has suggested it may reconsider participation if current tensions persist.
The Strait of Hormuz has emerged as a central flashpoint in the standoff, with both sides increasing their strategic focus on the critical maritime route. The region remains vital for global energy supplies, adding to the international concern surrounding the dispute.
Officials familiar with the situation suggest that while broad outlines of a potential agreement may exist, differences over tone and approach continue to hinder progress. Concerns have also been raised that strong public statements could derail ongoing diplomatic efforts.
With the ceasefire deadline approaching, the situation remains highly volatile. The coming days are expected to be crucial in determining whether diplomatic engagement continues or tensions escalate further.
