CANANGUINIM: A leisure outing turned into a heartbreaking incident on Sunday evening after an eight-year-old boy lost his life in a rivulet at Cananguinim, while his elder sister remains in critical condition after trying to save him.
The incident took place around 4 pm when the Naik family from Vastawaddo in Curchorem had gone to the area for a picnic. As per initial findings by Cuncolim police, the child, identified as Shloak Naik, had stepped into the rivulet while playing and soon got into trouble in the water.
Seeing her brother struggling, his 17-year-old sister, Sanika Naik, immediately rushed in to help and shouted for assistance. However, she too began to face difficulty in the water. People present at the spot managed to pull her out, but the boy could not be rescued in time.
Shloak was later taken out of the rivulet and rushed to the Balli Primary Health Centre, where doctors declared him brought dead. Sanika, who had swallowed water during the incident, was initially admitted to the South Goa District Hospital at Hospicio.
Given her serious condition, she was later shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim, where she continues to receive treatment.
Police Inspector Diego Gracias, in-charge of Cuncolim Police Station, said the family had visited the location for a picnic when the mishap occurred. Preliminary inquiries indicate that the boy had entered the water while playing, and his sister got into distress while attempting to rescue him.
The body has been kept at the Hospicio mortuary for post-mortem, while Cuncolim police have initiated further investigation into the case.
