New Delhi: An FIR has been registered against Anil Agarwal, chairman of Vedanta Group, along with several others following a fatal explosion at a power plant in Chhattisgarh that claimed 20 lives.
The incident occurred on April 14 at the company’s facility in Singhitarai village in Sakti district, when a high pressure steam pipe connected to a boiler burst. The explosion caused severe burn injuries to multiple workers, resulting in 20 deaths and leaving at least 16 others injured.
According to police officials, the case has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to causing death by negligence, negligent handling of machinery, and common intention. Authorities confirmed that around eight to ten individuals have been named in the FIR, with the possibility of more being added as the investigation progresses.
The probe is currently underway, with multiple reports awaited, including post mortem findings and analysis from forensic experts. Officials have also sought inputs from industrial health and safety authorities to determine whether lapses in operational protocols contributed to the tragedy.
A specialised technical team has been formed to examine the exact cause of the blast and assess compliance with safety standards at the facility. Investigators indicated that additional charges may be included depending on the findings of these reports.
The incident has sparked strong reactions, with demands for accountability and a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading to the explosion. The focus of the investigation remains on identifying responsibility and ensuring that appropriate legal action is taken based on the evidence gathered.
