CANACONA:Shri Dev Mallikarjuna of Shristhala – Canacona is known as a very awakened deity throughout Gomantak and North Kanada (Karnataka) region. In this shrine, where God and Parvati exist, various traditional rituals, customs and traditions are celebrated with great enthusiasm and vigour.
During the period of two months from Poornima to Phalgun Shashti, in Canacona and Karnataka regions/areas, one can experience divinity in the forms of Sanchar, Tarongotsava, Avatara on Gharwai, Kaul and Talaya some of the unique traditional customs. During this period, the procession of Tarangas, Gade, Bhagats, Melas and related sevakaryas move around the entire area. According to a certain date, God’s Avatar takes place at every household and kaulprasad is given to the families concerned.
This year the famous Tarangotsava of Shri Avatarpurush Deva is starting from Friday 26th January 2024. God’s Tarangas and Ghade’s will gather at the three main Gharwais (monasteries) of Asali, Khalwade and Maithal (Bhatpal) on the previous day. All the three Melas will be inaugurated in the early morning and the Avatar Krithya will be started.
At around 11.00 am on Friday morning at Shristhal in the precincts of Shri Mallikarjuna Devalaya, the “Khalle Pari” avatar will be performed and Kaul Prasad will be given to everyone. While taking kaul, devotees should keep calm and take kaul in discipline. One should be present in the temple till six o’clock in the evening and take kaul, then at three o’clock in the evening the avatar will be immersed and the waves will take place in the temple.
After a few days, Mahat Velip, Mahati Desai, Gharvaya of Khalwade and Gharvaya of Maithal (Bhatpal) will take “Talaya” and proceed to give darshan to their Kulavi (clansmen) and devotees at Lavajama Shiveshwar Mahal (North Karnataka) of Shri Avatar Purush Deva. This lavajama will travel to Karnataka’s Pantalbagh, Mudgeri, Nagphond, Sadashivagad, Bad, Makkeri, Chendiya, Kinnar, Bolye, Halga, Hulga, Hankon and Gopishitta areas and also from Ramnagar via Honnavar, Manki, Kaiga, Kumbharwada, Joida and Ulvi from Sanguem. Will arrive at Gaondongrim Kudevada. In the meantime, there will be an opportunity for avatar Purusha in five places on the other side of river Kali namely Sakli Makkeri, Vayli Makkeri, Chendiye, Kinnar and Kharga. After that Kaul Prasad will be given to Kulawis and Mahajans. As per the availability of this glorious time, God gives darshan and blessings to his clansmen and devotees in the areas of Bailur, Baindur, Barkhur and Haldipur.
After completing the Yatra in Karnataka, Shri Avatarpurusha Lavajama returns to Canacona area at the beginning of Phalgun month and starts Avatar, Kaulprasad and Talyo program from Khalwade to bless the Mahajans, Kulavis, Villagers and Devotees of Canacona areas, states a press note issued by Shri Mallikarjuna Temple, Management Committee President ,.
