CANACONA: With the graph of Covid-19 cases shooting through the roof on Wednesday with the detection of as many as 104 persons infected with the virus, the civil society here is demanding a total lockdown for more than a week as they feel that there are many infected persons roaming freely in the society spreading the virus all around.
A huge number of persons having symptoms similar to Covid-19 were seen on Wednesday and Friday at the Covid testing centre in the premises of the old hospital at Canacona Health Centre.
The cases which were initially in and around the coastal areas of Canacona are now spread evenly all over the taluka.
As it is the CHC staff was under lot of stress and the additional testing and taking care of the patients who have opted for home isolation its driving them crazy sources informed.
The same source informed that the CHC staff conducts antigen tests at the casualty ward of new premises while the RT-PCR swab is collected at the old hospital and sent for testing at South Goa District Hospital.
While the results of the antigen tests are quick to arrive if a person is Covid-19 positive or not, the RT-PCR results come the next day.
And the persons not following SOP till their report come has contributed to more and more people getting infected.
Sources at CHC informed that the active Covid-19 cases has gone past 400 which were around 100 a couple of weeks before.
Meanwhile a civil society group under the banner of Canacona Citizens Comitee held a meeting at Chaudi on Wednesday and requested the business owners in the commercial town of Canacona, Chaudi to voluntarily extend the lockdown for one week more than the three days announced by the government.
They also demanded to close down the Saturday bazar at Chaudi till the Covid-19 cases come down as almost all of the vendors who who come to the Saturday Bazar are from neighbouring state of Karnataka.
