CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council’s (CMC) unusual practice of transferring its daily collection of wet-garbage from its vehicles to another Compactor outside the Dumane GTP has created a garbage menace on the Canacona-Agonda MDR road at Dumane.
CMC regularly on a daily basis transfers its wet collection to another vehicle and shifts the same to Curchorem Garbage Plant.
CMC however, holds the shack-operators carrying tourism trades in Agonda and Khola for the garbage mess along the roadside outside the CMC’s Dumane GTP, and blames Agonda panchayat for their failure in curbing the roadside dumpings.
According to municipal sources, on a day-to-day basis two of the CMC wet garbage collecting vehicles, transfers its collection into one Garbage Compactor, which carries the load to Curchorem Garbage Treat Plant. ‘It is later segregated at their end in Curchorem Plant. Two of CMC’s dry waste collecting vehicles duly covered however, directly shifts the daily collection to Curchorem plant without coming to Dumane GTP.’, informed a sources at CMC.
Incidentally, CMC’s prestigious Garbage Treatment Plant at Dumane is located in such a way, that it belongs to Municipality, but placed in revenue village of Shristhal (Dumane having a handful of residents), but its effects are borne by people of Agonda and Khola, including contaminating the water bodies and paddy fields of Agonda village.
GTP Dumane is situated about 100 metres inside the forest land across the Canacona-Agonda-Khola MDR road. Shristal’s Dumane area is also an upcoming residential area having multiple residential houses and a couple of restaurants, have often complaint against the practice but to no avail, informed a source.
CMC practice of shifting the garbage from their vehicles to a Compactor from Curchorem with the help of a JCB just across the Canacona-Agonda-Khola MDR road on a daily and regular basis has virtually left strewn garbage in a bad light. ‘We have cleaned this road only a fortnight ago, but again the mess is generated which according to us is due to unscrupulous dumping of dry and wet garbage bags by motorists coming from Agonda –Khola side. We have even caught a few redhanded, and left after issuing stern warnings’, informed an employee of CMC, looking after the CMC’s GTP at Dumane.
Interestingly CMC has erected a gate on the entrance of the road towards GTG to stop unauthorised garbage dumping, but with the CMC itself carrying out transfer of garbage from their vehicles to another vehicle at this gated entrance has wet garbage dumps around 50 metres of the GTP road. Heaps of garbage is seen still left on this gated road, which ehas become a feasting ground for cattles and dogs. This garbage is then strewn around the MDR road (Canacona-Agonda-Khola).
‘The GTP has no space to carry out the garbage transfer/shift from one vehicle to another, so this activity is being carryout at the entrance of the road, but inside the CMC’s gate’, accepted the CMC source.
When asked, CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar balmed Agonda panchayat for the strewn garbage menace on the MDR Canacona-Agonda-Khola road near GTP Dumane. ‘People, perhaps tourism stakeholders runnings shacks on Agonda and Khola throws garbage bags outside the GTP plant road in the cover of darkness. We have warned several times before, but this is continued, and its result is seen on the roadside’.
When informed Agonda Panchayat holds daily and regular collection drive particularly on its coastal belt and have own garbage processing unit at its MRF, Naikgaunkar stated their collection is farce, and that’s the reason people brings and dumps wet and dry waste outside our GTP at Gumane. Some keeps large black garbage-bags, while others simply throws open bags outside the GTP’s gated road.’
Interestingly, Naikgaunkar informed that soon CCTV Camera’s are being installed on this road and once that is done the culprits will be taken to tasks, but presently Agonda panchayat should take it in their stride to stop this practice, so that motorists and particularly tourists are not treated to such serene atmosphere at Dumane.
