PORVORIM: At a meeting with Education Secretary Prasad Lolayekar in Porvorim, a group of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) representatives from various Goan schools urged him to move the school opening dates from April to June.
Cecille Rodrigues told reporters that the parents told the Secretary that if schools start on April 1, students won’t have a chance to relax.
According to Rodrigues, the parents also wanted to know what the children will be learning in April and May.
They recommended that activity-based education be made optional so that only those pupils who are motivated can attend class and others are not compelled to.
Additionally, the parents sought clarification regarding the hours of training.
“The period was successfully finished when NEP was implemented for the ninth standard. What justifies the additional class hours, then? The delegation inquired.
If the NEP bridge course is only necessary for the sixth standard, the parents also questioned why other student sections needed an additional hour of instruction.
Even the bridge course could be held in June, according to one of the parents.
The parents also asked the secretary to stick with the current teaching medium, which everyone finds comfortable, rather than switching it, she said. According to Rodrigues, the delegation requested a special meeting of the committee, which is made up of parents, headmasters, teachers, and specialists in putting the New Education Policy (NEP) into practice.
