PANAJI: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar has clarified that the party is yet to begin the exercise of identifying or shortlisting candidates for the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, dismissing any impression that the selection process is already underway.
Addressing questions over statements made by former CCP Mayor Surendra Furtado, Chodankar said those interested in contesting the elections are at liberty to work in their respective constituencies and connect with the public. He noted that political aspirants promoting themselves cannot be prevented from doing so.
He further explained that decisions on party nominations have not been initiated and stressed that he does not have the authority to award election tickets. According to him, the final selection of candidates will be made through the Congress party’s established process.
When asked to react to remarks by Goa Forward Party leader Vijay Sardesai, Chodankar refrained from commenting, saying he would not respond to the statement.
On the possibility of a merger involving the Congress, he said that while such a proposal had been put forward by Vijay Sardesai, the matter rests entirely with the party’s high command, which will take the final call.
