PANAJI: The Congress has raised serious concerns over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the exercise could lead to the deletion of genuine voters’ names and undermine the transparency of the electoral process.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar alleged that the 2002 SIR was an inclusive exercise aimed at adding eligible voters to the electoral rolls, whereas the 2026 revision was intended to exclude voters by removing their names. He claimed that while the 2002 exercise was conducted by the Election Commission of India, the present exercise was effectively being conducted by the BJP.
AICC Observer and former Maharashtra Minister Yashomati Thakur also questioned the transparency of the SIR, alleging that her children’s names had been deleted from the electoral rolls and that discrepancies were noticed in their dates of birth. She cautioned that similar issues could affect other citizens and said the Congress would intensify its efforts to highlight alleged voter deletions across states.
Thakur further alleged large-scale voter manipulation, claiming that objections raised before the Election Commission were ignored. She announced that the Congress would step up its ‘Vote Choro, Desh Bachao’ campaign across Goa through house-to-house outreach, district-level press conferences and booth-level awareness programmes.
Appealing to the media to support the campaign, Thakur said the issue concerned the protection of democracy and citizens’ constitutional rights.
The Congress leaders said they would continue raising concerns over alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision and mobilise people across Goa to create awareness about voter registration and deletion-related grievances.
