PANAJI: In a significant political development, the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has announced the launch of a state-wide campaign titled *“Samvidhan Bachao Yatra” aimed at defending democratic values and engaging directly with the people of Goa.
The campaign is set to begin on June 8, starting from the Mandrem constituency, and will cover all 40 assembly constituencies in the state.
The Yatra will be led by prominent Congress leaders, including GPCC President Amit Patkar, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, MLAs Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira and Altone D’Costa, and South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes, along with several senior party leaders at the district and block levels.
The inaugural event will be held at the Zilla Panchayat Hall in Mandrem at 4:00 PM on Saturday, June 8. The Congress leadership has appealed to citizens of Mandrem and surrounding areas to participate in large numbers and support the movement.
Speaking on the initiative, GPCC President Amit Patkar strongly criticized the BJP government, accusing it of weakening democratic institutions, undermining local governance, and ignoring the voices of Goans. “The BJP is not just corrupt—it is actively attacking the Constitution by bypassing local governance, ignoring people’s voices, and targeting key stakeholders of Goa’s economy such as traditional taxi operators, farmers, youth, and women,” said Patkar.
The Congress Party alleges that the BJP government is selling off Goa’s natural and cultural identity to corporate interests, and that the Samvidhan Bachao Yatra will serve as a platform to highlight these issues and mobilize public support for democratic accountability.
With this campaign, the GPCC aims to build momentum against what it terms as the BJP’s anti-people policies and erosion of constitutional values. The party has emphasized that the Yatra is not just a political outreach, but a call to action for Goans to unite in defence of their rights, identity, and democratic future.
