PANAJI: VM Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar, in collaboration with the National Commission for Women, organized a one-day Regional consultative Western India workshop on the Rights of Women under Property Law on 27th January 2024 at the college premises.
The organizing committee for the said event was constituted of the Principal, Dr. G. Shaber Ali; Vice Principal, Dr. Kim Couto – Coordinator; Asst Prof Disha Sardesai- Co-Coordinator; Ms. Bhavika Sharma- JTE legal, Legal cell, National Commission for Women, New Delhi.
The consultative workshop had 30 expert panelists from the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Goa. The panel comprised of judges, lawyers, NGOs, law professors and the Police department.
The Inaugural began with the lighting of the lamp in the presence of the Chief Guest, Mr. Irshad Agha, Principal District & Sessions Judge, South Goa; Sayonara Telles-Laad, President Children’s Court, Principal, Dr. G Shaber Ali; Vice Principal, Dr. Kim Couto and Ms. Bhavika Sharma, JTE legal, legal cell, National Commission for Women, New Delhi
All the dignitaries addressed the position of women’s property rights from the perspectives of different legal provisions under the Indian laws.
The inaugural ended with the vote thanks by Dr.Kim Couto and a group picture with all the panelists.
The workshop was divided into four technical sessions moderated by Principal, Dr G. Shaber Ali; Vice Principal, Dr. Kim Couto and Asst. Professor Disha Sardesai and the sessions and discussions included various aspects of Women’s Rights under the property law ranging from Succession, coparcenary right to Maintenance under the personal laws and Portuguese Civil code. In each technical session about 7 to 8 Panelists opined their views and pointed out few lacunae in the existing laws. At the end of the session all 30 panelists analysed, discussed and gave their valuable insights on the said topics and made recommendations to the National Commission for Women, New Delhi.
The session concluded with a valedictory ceremony where certificates and token of appreciation were awarded to all the expert panelist and ended with a vote of thanks by Asst Professor Disha Sardesai.
