New Delhi: The International Cricket Council has initiated an investigation into serious match-fixing allegations involving Canada’s campaign in the T20 World Cup, with reports suggesting links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
At the centre of the probe is Canada captain Dilpreet Bajwa, whose performance during a group stage match against the New Zealand national cricket team has raised concerns. The ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit is examining an unusual over bowled by Bajwa, which included multiple extras and boundary scoring deliveries, and is being treated as a potential instance of spot-fixing.
The investigation has widened following claims that organised criminal elements may have influenced aspects of team functioning. Reports indicate that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang could have played a role in exerting pressure within cricketing circles, raising serious questions about the integrity of team operations and governance.
As part of the inquiry, Bajwa has been questioned by officials and his mobile phone has been examined for possible links or communications related to the allegations. While no official charges have been announced so far, the probe is ongoing and remains a matter of concern for cricket authorities.
The match in question saw Canada post a competitive total, which was later chased down comfortably by New Zealand. The nature of the game, combined with specific moments under scrutiny, prompted further examination by officials monitoring the tournament.
The developments have sent ripples through the cricketing community, highlighting the need for strict vigilance against corruption. The ICC continues to review the matter closely, with a focus on safeguarding the credibility of the sport and addressing any external influence that could undermine fair play.
