PANAJI: Even with pre-monsoon showers and over two weeks of nonstop rain in Goa, the water levels in the dams are still relatively low. Less than 20% of the water capacity has been reported by two dams, Anjunem and Selaulim, and less than 40% by Amthane.
The Water Resources Department, on the other hand, is unfazed, predicting that by the end of August, water levels will rise and the dams will overflow.
Within two months, according to Minister Subhash Shirodkar, water capacity will increase. Chief Engineer Pramod Badami reaffirmed that the water level will rise gradually and said that each of these dams has a massive capacity.
“By the end of August, all of these dams will be fully operational, and an overflow is anticipated in the following month,” he continued.
Even with 326.90mm of rainfall, Anjunem Dam, which has the lowest capacity as of June 16, is still at 15.1%. After recording 430.20 mm of rainfall, Selaulim dam records 33.3 percent of its capacity; Amthane dam records 35.4%, while Panchwadi dam lags at 18%.
According to recent data, the Chapoli dam has a capacity of 46.7%, whereas the main Tillari dam, which supplies water to Sattari and some areas of Bicholim taluka, has a capacity of only 24.8%, despite receiving 220.40 mm of rainfall in the area. Gaunem Dam is the largest of the group, with a maximum capacity of 50.5%.
