New Delhi: Delhi Police has denied permission to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, citing a short notice period, alleged violations of previous conditions and prevailing restrictions in the New Delhi area.
The proposed demonstration was intended to demand accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). The organisation had submitted an application seeking permission for the protest, but police authorities rejected the request after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the proposed gathering.
Joint Commissioner of Police Nupur Prasad explained that the application had been submitted at short notice. According to the prescribed guidelines, requests for protests are required to be submitted at least 10 days before the scheduled date.
Police also raised concerns about the organisation’s conduct during an earlier protest. Authorities alleged that CJP had failed to comply with lawful directions and the undertakings it had provided while seeking permission for its previous demonstration.
The decision, police said, was taken after considering these alleged violations, the prevailing law and order situation, public safety requirements and the need to regulate traffic in the area.
Another factor cited in the decision was the enforcement of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the New Delhi area. The provision allows authorities to issue preventive orders in situations where immediate action is considered necessary to prevent potential danger or maintain public order.
Police warned that violations of restrictions imposed under Section 163 could invite legal action. The restrictions are intended to help authorities maintain public safety and prevent situations that could disrupt law and order.
The rejection means CJP will not be permitted to conduct its proposed October 10 demonstration at Jantar Mantar under the current approval process. The issue centres on the organisation’s demand for accountability from the Chief Election Commissioner, alongside the police’s stated concerns regarding procedural requirements, compliance with previous conditions and public order.
