PANAJI: The Department of Drinking Water has clarified a video circulating on social media that purportedly shows an unauthorised person entering a water storage tank at Keri village.
The department stated that the tank shown in the video is a raw water tank, where water is stored before being subjected to the required treatment process at the Water Treatment Plant.
According to the department, the raw water undergoes filtration and necessary dosing of alum and chlorine before being stored in a clear water tank and subsequently supplied to the public. It added that daily water quality testing reports are maintained by the respective offices.
The department stressed that water supply installations are vital public infrastructure and that their safety, security and hygienic condition are of utmost importance. It said unauthorised entry into water tanks or related installations is strictly prohibited as it could compromise the security and hygiene of the water supply system.
The Department of Drinking Water further clarified that no person is permitted to enter a tank without prior authorisation and permission from the competent authority.
Taking the incident seriously, the department said an FIR has been lodged at the police station against the person who allegedly entered the tank without authorisation, and necessary action will be taken as per the applicable law and rules.
The department also appealed to residents of Keri village not to draw conclusions solely on the basis of the circulated video or spread unverified information that could create unnecessary concern regarding the quality and safety of the public water supply.
The department reiterated that it remains committed to ensuring that water supplied to the public undergoes the prescribed treatment and quality-control procedures before distribution.
