New Delhi: India has intensified diplomatic efforts after a firing incident involving Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz, where at least 14 Indian flagged vessels remain stranded. The government has taken a serious view of the situation and moved swiftly to secure safe passage for its ships operating in the region.
The incident occurred on April 18 when personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps opened fire on two Indian cargo vessels. In response, New Delhi summoned the Iranian Ambassador and conveyed strong concern over the episode, highlighting the need to ensure the safety of maritime operations.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met the envoy and emphasised India’s deep unease, calling for immediate steps to prevent such occurrences. Preliminary inputs suggest the firing may have resulted from a communication gap between Iranian authorities and a local unit, though the matter remains under close watch.
While the vessels did not sustain major structural damage, minor impacts such as shattered glass panes were reported. The situation continues to be sensitive, with multiple Indian ships anchored in the region and a considerable number of Indian nationals present in Iran.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that diplomatic channels are actively engaged to address the issue. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India remains in constant contact with Iranian authorities to ensure the safety and movement of its vessels.
Since tensions escalated in the region earlier this year, India has already evacuated 10 Indian flagged LPG and oil tankers. However, several vessels, including large oil tankers and an LPG carrier, are still awaiting clearance for safe return.
The incident was also reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which noted that multiple vessels, including Indian ships, were targeted without prior warning. In a related development, another Indian vessel near Oman was reportedly struck by an unidentified projectile, raising fresh concerns over navigational safety.
India continues to press Iran to prevent any recurrence and to ensure secure movement through one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors.
