New Delhi: India has voiced serious concern following an alarming incident in the Strait of Hormuz, where two Indian-flagged vessels reportedly came under fire while in transit. The episode has intensified worries about the safety of one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, widely used for global energy shipments.
The incident occurred on Saturday as the vessels were navigating the narrow but strategically vital waterway. Both ships, carrying crude oil, were forced to alter course and return toward the Persian Gulf after reporting gunfire. Despite the tense situation, all crew members on board were confirmed safe, with no injuries reported.
Addressing the issue during a press interaction in Colombo, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri conveyed strong concern over the development. He emphasized that India has formally communicated its position, underscoring the importance of ensuring the safety of seafarers and maintaining stability in international waters.
India stressed that global shipping lanes, particularly those crucial for energy transportation, must remain open and free from disruptions. The Strait of Hormuz plays a pivotal role in global trade, handling a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Any threat to its security carries wide-reaching implications for international markets and supply chains.
In response to the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs took diplomatic steps by summoning Iran’s ambassador to register a formal protest. The government urged that immediate measures be taken to guarantee the safe passage of vessels, including those bound for India.
Officials also reiterated the principle that international waterways must allow unhindered movement of commercial shipping. The development has added to growing global unease over maritime security in the region, with India calling for swift action to prevent further escalation and ensure the protection of vital trade routes.
