New Delhi: The FIFA World Cup 2026 got off to a dramatic start on Friday, with co-hosts Mexico national football team defeating South Africa national football team 2-0 in a fiery opening match, while South Korea national football team came from behind to beat Czech Republic national football team 2-1 in an entertaining second game.
Mexico 2-0 South Africa: Red Cards Dominate Opening Match
Mexico began their home World Cup campaign in style, securing a comfortable victory, but the match was overshadowed by disciplinary issues that resulted in three straight red cards.
Forward Julián Quiñones etched his name into World Cup history by scoring the tournament’s first goal in the ninth minute, finishing clinically after a low cross slipped through the legs of South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s advantage midway through the second half with a powerful header, ensuring the hosts claimed all three points.
The match, however, became increasingly heated as Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio issued three straight red cards. South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were both sent off, while Mexico defender César Montes also received his marching orders.
South Korea 2-1 Czechia: Hwang Inspires Comeback
In the day’s second fixture, South Korea produced a spirited comeback to defeat Czechia 2-1 in Guadalajara.
Czech captain Ladislav Krejčí gave his side the lead in the 59th minute, putting pressure on the Koreans. However, South Korea responded strongly, equalising eight minutes later through midfielder Hwang In-beom.
Hwang continued to influence the contest and later delivered a precise cross for Oh Hyeon-gyu, who scored the winning goal in the 80th minute.
Named Player of the Match, Hwang’s goal and assist proved decisive as South Korea kicked off their World Cup campaign with an impressive victory.
The opening day of the tournament delivered goals, controversy and drama, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting FIFA World Cup 2026.
