MARGAO: A day after his resignation, the Goa Forward Party backed Ghanashyam Shirodkar lost the no-confidence motion tabled against him by 0-15 votes.
A special meeting was called at the municipality to vote on the no-confidence motion against Shirodkar, which was passed 0-15 versus zero votes this morning.
As per information, 10 councillors, including Ghanashyam, were absent during the no-confidence vote.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who recently joined BJP, said that there was no surprise in the result and was expected.
“We had seven councillors, and BJP had 8, which becomes 15, and the result today was on expected lines,” he said.
He attributed the election of Ghanshyam Shirodkar as Chairperson to some misunderstanding which was sorted out.
On who would be the new Chairperson, Kamat said, “we cannot decide arbitrarily. We will discuss and finalise the next Chairperson.”
Ghanashyam Shirodkar resigned from the post of Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council.
In a letter to the Directorate of Municipal Administration, Shirodkar cited that he is resigning on his own accord and for personal reasons.
BJP-backed Margao Municipal councillors had moved a No Confidence Motion against newly elected Chairperson Ghanshyam Shirodkar.
Although BJP councillors aligned to Digambar Kamat had a majority of 16, the BJP-backed Damodar Shirodkar lost the election on last Friday.
15 councillors of the BJP-Kamat camp were instructed to move the no-confidence motion against Ghanashyam during a meeting they were summoned to attend by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat at Panjim.
They requested the DMA to hold a fresh election to elect the Chairperson and to restrain Ghanashayam from discharging his duties as Chairperson of MMC until the process is complete.
Ghanshyam urged the political leaders of the BJP not to bring their party politics into the autonomous body.
