BICHOLIM: In a significant development for thousands of Goans, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant announced that the state government will soon bring in legislation to legalize houses built on private lands, as well as those on comunidade and Alvara lands.
Addressing concerns among residents facing uncertainty over the legal status of their homes, Dr. Sawant emphasized that the move is being made in compliance with court directives.
“This decision is not driven by any personal or political intention to demolish homes,” he clarified. “We are acting strictly as per the orders of the court.”
The Chief Minister’s statement comes amid growing anxiety among residents who have constructed homes on traditional landholdings without formal approvals.
The new law is expected to provide relief by offering a legal framework for regularizing such structures, many of which have stood for decades.
Details of the proposed legislation, including eligibility criteria and the application process for legalization, are expected to be announced in the coming days.
The move is likely to benefit a significant number of families, especially in rural and semi-urban parts of Goa where land records and tenure systems are complex.
Sources said that the government is working closely with legal experts and revenue authorities to ensure that the law is robust and in line with judicial directives.
CM Sawant was addressing the gathering after laying the foundation stone for the construction of the Government Office Complex in Bicholim Taluka, in the presence of Bicholim MLA Dr. Chandrakant Shetye, Maem MLA Premendra Shet and other dignitaries.
This modern office complex, to be built at a cost of ₹57.33 crore, will accommodate multiple Government departments and will feature comprehensive facilities including a library and an open hall, aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and public service delivery. The project is slated for completion within 18 months.
Sawant also said that Government of Goa remains committed to bolstering public infrastructure, ensuring better governance and seamless implementation of its initiatives and programs for the benefit of all citizens.
