Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a crucial high-level meeting at his residence in New Delhi on Monday amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. The meeting was attended by key government and security officials including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the three service chiefs—General Upendra Dwivedi, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, and Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh. Also present were National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) chief Ravi Sinha.
The meeting came just two days after India and Pakistan agreed to a temporary ceasefire following days of cross-border missile strikes and drone attacks. The ceasefire was reached after India launched a massive retaliatory operation, codenamed “Operation Sindoor,” on May 7. The operation targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), resulting in the death of over 100 terrorists, including several high-level operatives. In response, the Pakistani military launched missile and drone attacks towards India’s western region, all of which were successfully intercepted by Indian defence systems.
To further ease tensions, military operations chiefs from both India and Pakistan are scheduled to hold talks on Monday. The goal of these discussions is to solidify the ceasefire and explore ways to prevent future escalations. Interestingly, US President Donald Trump claimed in a social media post that the ceasefire talks were “mediated” by the United States, though neither India nor Pakistan has officially confirmed this.
In a significant move, Indian authorities have also decided to reopen 32 civilian airports that had been closed during the military conflict, signaling a cautious return to normalcy. The situation remains sensitive, but the high-level deliberations at the Prime Minister’s residence underscore India’s commitment to national security, diplomacy, and regional stability.
