PANAJI: At a time when Goa’s reservoirs are under close public scrutiny and concerns over water availability are growing, the State’s primary online source for dam storage information has unexpectedly gone offline.
The website, which provides regular updates on water levels and storage in Goa’s major reservoirs, has remained inaccessible for several days, leaving citizens, researchers and journalists without access to official data at a critical juncture.
The outage comes as attention increasingly turns to the State’s water reserves following a prolonged break in monsoon rainfall and reports indicating a decline in storage levels across key dams.
For many, the portal has served as the most reliable way to track the State’s water situation in real time. However, repeated attempts to access the platform over the past week have yielded no results, effectively creating an information blackout on reservoir levels.
What has raised eyebrows further is the apparent lack of awareness within the department itself.
When contacted, sources from WRD said they was unaware that the portal was not functioning and noted that website maintenance was not handled by officials under his direct control.
“We were not informed about any issue with the website. None of my officers are responsible for maintaining it. I will look into the matter,” sources said.
The response has sparked fresh questions about who is responsible for ensuring uninterrupted public access to information that is increasingly important for policymakers, farmers, industries and households alike.
While government sources indicated that departmental websites are generally maintained through the Information Technology Department, no official explanation has yet been offered for the outage.
Whether the disruption is the result of a technical glitch, maintenance work or administrative oversight remains unclear. What is clear, however, is that as anxiety over water reserves grows, the disappearance of official reservoir data has only deepened concerns over transparency and accountability.
