PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Monday emphasised the need for skill development, youth empowerment and the preservation of Goa’s linguistic and cultural heritage, stating that practical knowledge and skills are more important than merely obtaining a degree.
Addressing the 149th Jayanti Utsav of Shenoi Goembab, Sawant said many Goans are not inclined to take up labour-category jobs and instead aspire to work in organised sectors. He said the State Government is focusing on reskilling and upskilling programmes to prepare young people for better employment opportunities.
“Goans are not ready to work in labour categories; I feel every Goan should work in well-organised sectors. Our government is working on reskilling and upskilling. A degree is not the only important thing; knowledge and skills are what matter,” the Chief Minister said.
Urging the youth to make the most of their formative years, Sawant stressed the importance of career-building, physical fitness and personality development. “This is the right age to build your career, focus on fitness and develop your personality,” he said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the growing preference among students to pursue higher education within Goa. He noted that students studying outside the State often face challenges such as homesickness, affordability issues and difficulties adapting to food habits, including missing traditional Goan fish curry and rice. With several private universities being established in Goa, he said many students are now choosing to continue their studies closer to home.
Expressing concern over the declining use of Konkani, Sawant said the language is gradually losing ground in households. He observed that many people no longer speak Konkani at home and are increasingly unable to read and write the language. Stressing the need for immediate action, he called on society to work towards preserving and promoting Konkani as an integral part of Goa’s cultural identity.
Reflecting on his tenure as Chief Minister, Sawant said that despite serving for more than seven and a half years, very few people speak about the positive work carried out by his government. He remarked that while many are aware of his contributions, they often choose not to discuss them publicly, adding that attention is frequently given to “special people.” He also noted that he belongs to a small community.
Sawant reiterated his government’s commitment to empowering youth through education and skill development while ensuring that Goa’s language, culture and heritage are preserved for future generations.
