New Delhi: TKS Elangovan on Friday criticised actor politician Vijay over the ongoing political developments in Tamil Nadu, saying that the TVK chief should first secure adequate support from political parties before approaching the Governor to stake claim for government formation.
The remarks came amid mounting uncertainty over who will form the next government in the state after the Assembly election results produced a fractured mandate. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is currently short of the majority mark of 118 seats required to form the government.
Elangovan stated that when TVK initially approached the Governor as the single largest party with 107 seats, there was a possibility of being invited to form the government and prove majority on the floor of the House. However, he argued that once TVK attempted to present itself as part of a coalition without securing a clear majority, the situation changed.
He further said that if the party had independently staked claim as the largest single party, the Governor could have allowed it to form the government first. According to him, once coalition support became uncertain, the expectation shifted towards proving an absolute majority before any invitation to form the government could be considered.
The political crisis intensified after TTV Dhinakaran accused TVK of forging a support letter from his party’s MLA elect to show backing for a coalition arrangement. TVK strongly denied the allegation and accused Dhinakaran of spreading misinformation while hiding facts related to the controversy.
Elangovan said the matter is now under legal scrutiny after a complaint was filed, adding that the issue should be settled in court.
At present, TVK reportedly has the backing of the Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). However, support from smaller parties such as the Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam and the Indian Union Muslim League remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, the stance of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi is being closely watched, with reports indicating that party chief Thol Thirumavalavan is expected to meet Vijay later in the day.
