PANAJI: The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in Goa has intensified action against foreign nationals found violating visa conditions, with two persons from Thailand and Uganda deported from the state on Thursday night.
The two nationals had arrived in India on tourist visas on separate dates but remained beyond the period permitted under their visas. Officials said both were subsequently processed for deportation and sent back to their respective countries. The Thai national was also convicted in connection with the overstay.
In a separate case, a Kenyan woman was found to have remained in India beyond the validity of her tourist visa. After her conviction, she was transferred to the detention centre in Mapusa on Thursday evening, where she will remain until arrangements are made for her deportation.
The latest cases take the number of foreign nationals deported by the FRRO for overstaying to five this month. Officials indicated that further action against visa violators is likely in the coming days.
The enforcement drive follows six deportions carried out last month. Those deported included three Russian nationals and citizens of Belarus, Tanzania and Bangladesh.
Since the beginning of the year, the FRRO has deported or facilitated the departure of more than 55 foreign nationals from Goa, according to officials.
Immigration violations have also led to a number of arrests in the state. Nearly 20 foreign nationals have been arrested over the past two months for alleged breaches of immigration regulations. The arrested persons include nationals of Thailand, Russia, Iran, Uganda, Japan, Austria, Nigeria and Kenya.
Officials have found cases where alleged overstays extended for several years. Some of those facing action were reportedly residing in Goa’s coastal areas.
