Panaji: In a address at the Ideas of India Summit 2025 in Mumbai, Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant emphasized the state’s robust security infrastructure and its impact on the thriving tourism sector.
Highlighting the swift response of the Goa police, Sawant noted that law enforcement reaches incident sites within a mere five to ten minutes, a testament to the state’s vigilant policing.
Goa, known for its vibrant tourism industry, has seen a significant 21% increase in tourist numbers, with 10 million visitors this year, up from eight million the previous year.
Sawant attributed this growth to the government’s efforts in decongesting popular tourist areas and enhancing infrastructure. Despite some social media influencers suggesting a decline in tourism, the Chief Minister refuted these claims, stating that Goa remains a “safe and clean” destination.
Sawant also addressed recent incidents of clashes between tourists and locals, expressing regret but emphasizing the prompt response of the police. He reiterated Goa’s commitment to the principle of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (the guest is God), ensuring that every visitor feels welcome and secure.
The Chief Minister praised the arrangements made by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, while calling for an end to VIP culture. Sawant highlighted Goa’s progress in various sectors, including its ranking fourth in the Sustainable Development Goals index, with ambitions to reach the top by 2030.
Goa’s economy, once heavily reliant on mining, is now driven by tourism and the pharmaceutical sector. The government is focusing on infrastructure development, human resource enhancement through skilling and upskilling, and aims to achieve “Viksit Goa” (Developed Goa) by 2037. Sawant also mentioned the state’s Uniform Civil Code since 1961 and the mandatory registration of births, deaths, and marriages.
In a sarcastic remark, he added, “People never knew Goa had several famous temples and that Hindus live here,” emphasizing that his government is also promoting sports and spirituality.
