New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the crew of IASV Triveni for successfully completing the historic ‘Samudra Pradakshina’ circumnavigation expedition, describing the achievement as a powerful symbol of courage, determination and India’s growing maritime capabilities.
Interacting with the officers, Singh said their unwavering dedication had inspired him and reinforced his own resolve. He added that the expedition proved how conviction, discipline and determination can help overcome even the most challenging obstacles.
Praising the all women crew, the Defence Minister described their capability and confidence as “incredible” and said the successful completion of the mission had broken long held stereotypes about women serving in demanding military roles. He said the expedition demonstrated that physical strength, mental resilience and leadership are not defined by gender, adding that the achievement would inspire young women across the country to pursue their ambitions without hesitation.
Singh also highlighted the expedition as a shining example of Tri Services Jointness, with officers from the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force sailing together on a common mission under the national flag. He said the voyage reflected the strength of teamwork and showed that no challenge is too great when the armed forces work together.
The Defence Minister commended the crew for showcasing India’s engineering excellence, indigenous capabilities and technological advancements during port visits across the world. He said the mission conveyed a strong message that India is capable of competing with the best in every field.
According to the Defence Ministry, the expedition was the result of nearly two years of intensive preparation, meticulous planning and continuous support from multiple organisations. The crew successfully completed all internationally recognised requirements for a global circumnavigation by crossing every meridian of longitude, crossing the Equator twice, traversing the International Date Line and rounding the three Great Capes: Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope.
The successful passage through the challenging Drake Passage and around Cape Horn earned the crew membership of the prestigious Cape Horners, a distinction reserved for sailors who navigate one of the world’s toughest maritime routes.
Beyond its sailing achievement, ‘Samudra Pradakshina’ also strengthened India’s military diplomacy by promoting the country’s maritime heritage, military professionalism and cultural values during its visits to friendly nations around the world.
