PANAJI: Residents across Goa received emergency-style notifications on their mobile phones on Saturday as authorities carried out a trial of the state’s disaster alert communication system.
The exercise, conducted as part of a nationwide initiative, was aimed at checking the efficiency of the Cell Broadcast-based warning mechanism that can be used during natural disasters and other emergencies.
Several citizens reported receiving loud alerts accompanied by warning messages on their devices. Officials clarified that the notifications were only part of a system test and there was no actual emergency situation.
The Goa State Disaster Management Authority stated that the mock exercise was undertaken to improve preparedness ahead of the monsoon season and to ensure timely dissemination of critical information during emergencies.
The alert platform is designed to instantly transmit warnings to mobile users located within a specific area, even during heavy network congestion. Authorities said the technology could be used during floods, cyclones, lightning incidents, earthquakes, industrial accidents, and similar situations requiring urgent public communication.
The emergency notification system forms part of the Centre’s broader initiative to strengthen disaster response and public safety communication through indigenous technology platforms.
