PANAJI: The Goa government has backed the status quo on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Sada, maintaining that the Maratha king is a legendary figure and an integral part of Goa’s history.
In an affidavit filed before the High Court, the Chief Secretary stated that the government wants the statue to remain at its existing location. The affidavit further stated that due legal procedures would be followed to purchase the land allegedly encroached upon by the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA).
The government’s stand comes amid the ongoing legal dispute over the statue’s location and the land on which it stands.
The High Court is scheduled to hear the matter on November 3.
