Opinion Poll Day holds great historical significance for the state of Goa and should be celebrated on a large scale to educate and remind the citizens of the crucial events that shaped the destiny of the State.
The late Manohar Parrikar, during his tenure as Chief Minister, initiated a State function in 2018 at Fatorda, marking the importance of commemorating Opinion Poll Day annually. This tradition serves as a platform to impart the historical importance of the day to the younger generation.
Opinion Poll Day, which is on 16th January, is as pivotal as the Liberation of Goa from Portuguese rule in 1961.
It signifies the day when the people of Goa successfully retained the identity of their land by voting against the proposed merger with Maharashtra.
This significant event, supported by the United Goans Party and more Dr Jack de Sequeira provided the residents of Goa with a choice between remaining a separate territory of India or merging with the Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra, proposed by the Mahashtrawadi Gomantak Party. Notably, it stands as the only referendum to have taken place in independent India, symbolizing the democratic spirit of the nation.
The imperative of celebrating Opinion Poll Day is particularly evident in the need to inform the children of Goa about the historical milestone and its enduring significance.
By commemorating this day, they can grasp the remarkable effort that was made to preserve the unique identity and autonomy of their beloved state. It also serves to educate them on the importance of democracy, and the power of collective voice and decision-making.
In the current Assembly session, the Leader of the Opposition successfully presented a Private Members’ Resolution advocating for the celebration of Opinion Poll Day at a State function, a proposal that was readily accepted by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant.
However, it is important to note that the proposal was met with resistance, as Minister Sudin Dhavalikar questioned the timing and necessity of reviving the Opinion Poll issue.
Nevertheless, the support for the celebration came from Minister Ravi Naik, who emphasized the importance of recognizing the historical significance of the day and criticized the opposing view.
The commemoration of Opinion Poll Day is not just a festive affair but a symbol of the freedom and independence that the people of Goa achieved through their resolute decision-making.
It serves as a reminder of the perseverance and determination of the citizens, who staunchly chose to uphold the distinct identity of Goa. Encouraging the celebration of this day is pivotal in honouring the valour of those who stood for the autonomy of the state and educating future generations about the importance of preserving history and democratic values.
The celebration of Opinion Poll Day stands as a testament to the democratic spirit and the legacy of Goa’s distinct identity.
It is incumbent upon the state to organize a grand State function to honour and remember the historic significance of this remarkable day.
Not only does it serve as a tribute to the past, but it also lays the foundation for instilling a sense of pride and awareness among the citizens, particularly the younger generation, about the remarkable events that shaped the destiny of their beloved state.
