PANAJI: The Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) will soon roll out a new scheme aimed at rejuvenating traditional salt pans across the state, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced.
The program will focus on boosting the production of local bio-salt, restoring ecological balance, and providing support to salt pan owners. This initiative will be implemented in partnership with the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) in Bhavnagar and local experts.
The announcement was made during the International Day for Biodiversity 2025 celebrations held in Sankhali, where CM Sawant also revealed a series of upcoming biodiversity conservation projects planned for the year. Notably, two new GoVan Multi-Processing Centres will be set up at Sancorda and Rivona, complementing the nine existing centers located in Kudne, Pissurle, Bhironda, Mayem, Pilgao, Verna, Dabhal, Sulcorna, and Uguem.
In addition, the government plans to introduce support schemes to encourage grassroots biodiversity conservation through People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBRs) and community-led actions. CM Sawant praised ongoing initiatives such as GoVan, Green Skilling, and the revival of indigenous crops like Patni rice and Parra watermelon, emphasizing their role in empowering local communities while preserving Goa’s rich natural heritage.
