NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has rejected Tarun Tejpal’s request seeking exemption from surrender and directed him to surrender within two weeks in connection with the 2013 sexual assault case in Goa.
The court’s direction comes after the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court convicted Tejpal on August 6 and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The High Court had overturned his earlier acquittal by the trial court.
Tejpal has challenged the High Court verdict and the sentence before the Supreme Court. His appeal is scheduled to be considered by the apex court at a later stage.
The Supreme Court’s latest order means Tejpal will have to surrender within the stipulated two-week period while his challenge to the conviction remains pending.
