PANAJI: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane today said that Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital will be the first government hospital in the country to start IVF treatment free of cost.
Rane was addressing the gathering on the occasion of the inauguration of IVF treatment at GMC.
“Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital will be the first government hospital in the country to start IVF treatment free of cost,” said Rane.
Rane said couples trying to have a child go outside the state for advanced infertility treatment. “Couples go to Pune or Kolhapur for IVF treatment and some have been cheated,” he said.
The health minister said that the hospital has received Rs 2 crore in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. The money was utilised to procure equipment.
“With Dr Padte on board, we will be able to provide the best facility,” said Rane.
The preparations to introduce IVF treatment at GMC started three years ago, but the plan was deferred due to the pandemic.
Around 20 per cent of women in the state face problems of infertility, he said, noting that many of them require advanced and expensive medical treatments for it costing between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 9 lakh.
Rane said the government has been proceeding step by step in introducing new treatments.
“Also we are sending 50 nurses to train at Tata memorial hospital,” he added.
The state government is also in the process of setting up a ‘mother and child’ block at GMCH, which would be integrated with the hospital’s gynaecology department, he added.
