PANAJI: Goa witnessed a significant decline in road accident fatalities during May 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to the latest traffic accident analysis released by the Goa Police.
From 1 May to 31 May 2026, the state recorded 111 motor vehicle accidents, compared to 110 in May 2025, reflecting a marginal increase of 0.9%. However, fatal accidents dropped sharply from 19 to 3, while road fatalities also declined from 19 to 3, marking an 84% reduction.
At the same time, grievous injury cases rose from 8 to 20, an increase of 150%, indicating a shift in the severity pattern of reported accidents.
For the January to May 2026 period, Goa registered 536 accidents, slightly lower than 543 in the corresponding period of 2025. Fatal accidents declined from 59 to 42, while fatalities fell from 62 to 43, showing reductions of 28.8% and 30.6% respectively. Grievous injury cases, however, increased from 83 to 99, up by 19.2%.
Among traffic units, Canacona, Margao, and Ponda reported increases in accident cases during May, while several jurisdictions recorded a reduction in fatal crashes and deaths.
Traffic authorities stated that the data reflects an overall improvement in road safety outcomes across Goa, particularly in reducing fatalities, even as enforcement agencies continue to focus on accident-prone stretches and strengthen road safety measures statewide.
