BAMBOLIM: By early 2025, the Goa Medical College (GMC) will have a center of excellence in skull base surgery for difficult procedures involving the base of the skull that are performed through the nose using an endoscope.
According to Dr. Shivanand Bandekar, dean of GMC, the state government has already approved the Center’s equipment procurement.
There are some malignancies in the base of the skull, according to Dr. Ponraj Sundaram, a professor and chairman of the GMC neurosurgery department. Because the brain must be retracted and the surgical access corridor is quite small, these are highly different to reach surgically. In this area, endoscopic skull base surgery is a recent advancement.
The ENT and neurosurgery departments must work together in this area since both teams’ coordinated efforts are essential to success. GMC is working to create a surgery unit that operates on the skull base. Raising awareness is the initial step in this endeavor, followed by skill development within the department.
He stated that the acquisition of the equipment required for the unit is underway and that “we will send some surgeons to different centers for training.”
According to Dr. Bandekar, the center will be located in the neurosurgery and ENT surgery department on the seventh floor of the Super Specialty Block.
“With the assistance of skilled physicians and a group of physicians who visit us frequently, we will be able to perform any complicated surgery that we were previously unable to perform due to the limitations of the skull base. The average person, who cannot afford these expensive surgeries, will benefit. In the Department of Health, it is a significant step. He promised that it would be done at no cost.
