TALEIGAO: Goa University has terminated the services of its main canteen contractor following allegations that worms were found in food served to students, a development that has intensified concerns over food safety and campus hygiene.
In a statement, the University said students would not have to pay mess charges until a new catering agency is appointed. Temporary arrangements are expected to be made to ensure uninterrupted food services during the transition.
The incident has triggered widespread resentment among students, many of whom claimed they had repeatedly flagged issues related to food quality and cleanliness without any meaningful response. Along with demanding better standards, students have sought the replacement of the Member Secretary of the Canteen Committee, alleging that earlier complaints were consistently overlooked.
Meanwhile, members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) intensified the agitation by entering the Registrar’s office and staging a protest inside the cabin. The protesters demanded immediate corrective measures, strict accountability, and regular monitoring of food served on campus to safeguard students’ health.
The demonstration followed an earlier BJYM protest outside the University’s administrative block, where the youth wing had accused the administration of failing to address long-standing concerns over the canteen’s functioning.
